Five porcelain laminates covered small chips and whitened our patient's smile. These veneers are colored and shaped to look just like natural teeth. As a result, people can see a beautiful smile, as opposed to noticing that our patient has undergone cosmetic dentistry.

Our Approach to Natural-Looking Porcelain Veneers

Our goal is to create custom veneers that blend in easily with the rest of your smile. As Dr. Allswang explains, our materials and dedication to patient satisfaction can make all the difference. Come explore the confidence-boosting benefits with a consultation at our welcoming Dearborn practice.

Veneers Can Help You Conceal
a Variety of Cosmetic Insecurities

Wondering which types of aesthetic concerns porcelain veneers can address? We often use them to hide common insecurities such as:

  • Chips or Cracks in the Teeth
  • Discoloration
  • Minor Misalignment
  • Disproportionately Sized Teeth

Before beginning treatment, you will meet with one of our Dearborn, MI, dentists to discuss your goals and determine whether dental veneers are right for you. The best candidates for veneers have:

Woman with a small chip and uneven shade on her front teeth

Dental veneers are designed to mask a wide range of dental imperfections, but may not be the ideal solution for certain needs. If you have surface stains on your teeth, teeth whitening alone may be sufficient. If you suffer from extensive misalignment, orthodontic treatment may be a better choice. Lastly, if you have tooth damage, crowns may provide the support you need.

The doctor will need to remove a thin layer of enamel to make room for your porcelain veneer. Therefore, patients must have a sufficient amount of healthy tooth enamel to qualify for treatment.

The best candidates for veneers have good oral health and no decay or periodontal disease. If you have other dental conditions, we will treat these first before recommending cosmetic dentistry.

Veneers require our dentists to make permanent alterations to the natural tooth structure, so the procedure is only a good option for patients who are committed to having porcelain veneers or another type of dental restoration for the rest of their lives.

Placing Dental Veneers

A New Smile in Two Appointments

We personalize each and every veneer treatment, creating a different plan for all of our patients. The primary steps go something like this:

Consultation

During your initial consultation with one of our dentists, we will determine if you are a good candidate for porcelain veneers or if you'd be better suited for another cosmetic dentistry procedure.

Preparation

At your first appointment, the dentist will first remove a very fine layer of enamel in order to create space for the veneers. If your teeth are discolored, you may choose to undergo teeth whitening so that we can match the color of your veneer to your newly whitened smile.

Impressions

Next, the dentist will take impressions of your teeth. The impressions will be sent to a trusted dental lab. While the lab is fabricating your custom veneers, our dentists will provide temporary veneers.

Placement

Typically, it takes the ceramist at the lab two to three weeks to craft your porcelain veneers. Once they are ready, you will return to the office for placement. After checking that the veneers are a precise fit, the dentist will bond them to the surface of the tooth with dental cement.

Have Additional Concerns? Consider a Fully Personalized Smile Makeover

Veneers are an excellent option for transforming your front teeth. If you have additional concerns, you may want to consider a comprehensive smile makeover. Each plan is completely customized to your needs. For example, if you have widespread staining our dentists can whiten your teeth before veneer placement. Or, they can use gum contouring to remove excess tissue for a more balanced smile.

Restorative vs. Cosmetic Procedures What's the Difference?

Some patients come to us thinking they need veneers, when really they require a crown, or vice versa. We use veneers for cosmetic concerns and crowns for restorative ones. Not sure how to tell the difference? We'll give you a quick rundown:

Cosmetic

Cosmetic dental procedures are focused on transforming the aesthetics of your smile. They are not medically necessary to maintain good oral health, which means insurance won't cover the cost of treatment. Veneers are considered a cosmetic procedure since they mask the dental problem rather than structurally fix it. You can help extend the life of cosmetic procedures like veneers through good oral hygiene and regular dental cleanings.

Restorative

Restorative dental procedures are focused on improving your oral health. Since these procedures are deemed medically necessary, insurance will often cover at least a part of the procedure's cost. The goal of restorative dentistry is primarily to improve the function of your teeth, not the look of your smile. While a side effect may be an improvement in the appearance of your smile, this is not the prime focus of the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Porcelain Veneers

We believe in empowering patients with all the knowledge they need. That way, they can make the best decision for their smile. Some of the most commonly asked veneers questions we receive at our Dearborn dental practice include:

No; veneers are only used to conceal your front, flat teeth. However, even though they're primarily used for restorative purposes, dental crowns can potentially be an option for treating teeth further back in the mouth.

Yes, you can, as long as your TMJ disorder is being treated. Teeth grinding can damage your veneers, as well as your remaining teeth. Luckily, we offer temporomandibular disorder (TMD) treatment using personalized oral appliances.

Yes, absolutely. The beauty of veneers is that they're incredibly easy to personalize. Whether you want just one veneer, several, or enough to cover all your front teeth, our dentists can tailor treatment to your goals.

No, you should not feel any discomfort. We can use dental anesthetic while placing your veneers and preparing your natural enamel. This will ensure the treatment area is completely numbed.

“It’s rare to find a dentist’s office these days that feels so patient-focused, caring, and up-to-date. Many offices in this area can feel rushed, impersonal, or outdated, but here you feel valued and cared for. I can honestly say I’ve finally found a dental office I can grow with, and I couldn’t recommend Dearborn Family Dentistry more!”
